On-Call Policy For Your Staff

Employer Resources

MPAQ has put together a sample on-call policy that members can use with their staff. This example policy is designed to provide members with a starting point of what to include in your on-call arrangements and setting clear parameters for your team to adhere to.

This policy includes details about the new right to disconnect provisions which came into effect from August 2024 for large businesses. This will come into effect from August 2025 for small businesses.

The example policy guides businesses to consider:

  • The provisions of “on-call” within the Plumbing and Fire Sprinklers Award 2020
  • Any allowances the business will pay the employee for making themselves available to be on-call
  • The length of on-call arrangements and how that will be rostered
  • The response times for on-call work and any specific client processes
  • Payments an employee is entitled to when on-call, ensuring the business meets the minimum requirements of the Plumbing and Fire Sprinklers Award 2020.

We understand that on-call responsibilities can be demanding, and this example policy assists our members to consider the requirements.

When implementing a policy, it is always important to train staff on the provisions of the policy and obtain their acknowledgement and agreement.
